TIPS

Having an organized move can be the difference between living through an extremely stressed process or

have an incredible experience when starting a new stage in your new home.

Here I share super good tips that have worked with my clients over the years.

1. Clean up before you move, not after

  • I can't overemphasize that DO NOT take the same thing from point A to point B. When you arrive at a new home it is like starting from scratch; new life, new energy, new opportunities for a clean slate. When you take ALL the things without DEBUGging it is like taking the past to a new space.

  • Free yourself from attachments and start from scratch! I recommend you support yourself with signs that help you refine the process before moving. Remember: donation, garbage, friends and family and recycling.

2. Put together a moving folder

  • Living through a move is a stress that we all experience, even if we are the coolest in the world. We deal with many papers, contracts, receipts, data, lists, telephone numbers, budgets, services and more, also in the middle of a move it can disappear and drive you crazy.

  • If you have EVERYTHING related to your move in one place, you can focus on what's going on around you without the stress of losing something or not finding important information you need right now.

  • I apply the assembly of a “moving” folder in which I separate by categories what I need and save myself a headache. Try it!

3. hand packing kit

  • So I recommend that you have your “special moving kit” where EVERYTHING you need is to pack so you always have everything at hand and don't waste time looking for things.

4. Set colors for each room with labels

  • When things finally arrive at the new house, what I always hear is the movers say: “Where do I leave this box for you?” like 30 times. And you, with everything that is happening around you, just say that they leave them “wherever” and then you see.

  • I propose that for save yourself the back pain of the next week, make a system of colored labels for each room and packaging according to those colors.

  • It is very easy to put stamps on the boxes depending on which room each one goes in, and then put a card of that color on each room, so the movers will only have to follow colors and not wait for instructions from you.

5. Effortlessly change hanging clothes

  • With a large plastic bag, cover piles of hanging clothes from the bottom up and tie a knot at the top.

  • Unhook the hooks and take it in the car to your new home.

  • When you arrive all you have to do is hang it up and remove the bag. Ready! You changed your hanging clothes in 2 easy steps. Remember to reuse industrial plastic bags that are the strongest.

6. Use small boxes to carry books and cut a triangle on the sides to make loading them easier without hurting yourself.

  • Total mistake storing ALL your books in the biggest boxes; they can be unholstered and you need the Hulk to charge them up afterwards. Even when you are not going to make the move, you can lend a hand to the backs of the movers and leave them less volume and weight in the small boxes.

7. Wrap the cups, glasses or dishes with your own rags, towels and sheets

  • Wrap things that can break in bubble wrap so they are less at risk in the changing process.

  • If you don't want to invest in it, recommend that you use the things that you already have at home and that still need to go to the new home, such as sheets, towels, kitchen towels, etc.

8. Pack a suitcase with the basics so you can use everyday things for the first day before unpacking.

  • Sometimes with the rush and stress of wanting to pack the ENTIRE house we forget that we are going to be extremely tired when we get to the new space, and that the last thing we want is to open 5 boxes to find our pajamas and toothbrush.

  • I recommend that before packing you pack a travel suitcase with the basics for daily use for about a week so that you can take it with you unpacking and adapting to your new home.

9. Use zip-loc bags to keep small things together during the move.

  • Sometimes we have a lot of little things that we just don't want to put in the boxes, for fear of getting lost or separated from the rest.

  • The best thing will be that all those small things are stored by categories inside Zip-loc bags and it is easier to order and accommodate them in their new home when they arrive.

10. Use a labeler to identify the cables in your house and be able to identify them in the new house without problem

  • Since we have always connected everything in the old house, when we arrive at the new home and unpack ALL the cables, many times we can make balls and have no idea which was which.

  • Put labels to identify what each one is and when you connect everything again, make them much faster and without headaches.

11. Check all the things in the cupboard before packing them

  • Take out everything that is expired and go making a list of the things you need to buy in the new house.

  • It feels super good to start from scratch and get rid of all the things that only take up valuable space. Please check before packing and don't take everything!

12. Try to consume as many things as possible from the fridge and not buy things during the week before the move.

  • It's best to do that in the new house so things don't get messed up in the meantime.

13. Remember to have disposable cups and plates in case they have to eat something quickly that day or to offer water to those who move. Remember that everything is already packed.

  • Normally the removals begin in the morning and can give us the afternoon, and what we least think about is our basic needs such as eating or drinking water.

  • I recommend you to be super hydrated and order, even if it is a pizza, so as not to be fasting stress effort all day.
